YSHS swimming report

Plagued by injuries, illness and absenteeism, the YSHS girls and boys swim teams still managed to perform well at the Springfield North Panther Invitational at the Springfield YMCA on Dec. 20.

In the girls events, the 200 freestyle relay team of Tina Chen, Olivia Dixon, Sarah Wolfe and Eve GunderKline placed 14th in 2:20.90.

Dixon showed solid progress in the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, which she swam for the first time. Chen had a great swim in the 100 freestyle, then put in a strong performance in the 100 breastroke. GunderKline also swam well, posting the team’s fastest time in the 100 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.

In the boys events, Carey Dixon and Brandon Carver-Halley both had good swims in the 50 freestyle in their second high school meet. Jon Bullock placed 26th in the 50 free in 29.13, and 17th in the 100 freestyle in 1:05.88. Carver-Halley finished 16th with a time of 1:29.35 in the 100 breaststroke.

Early season fatigue caused the Bulldogs to pull out of their regularly scheduled meet against Stivers and Wayne on Tuesday. But coaches Dave Wishart and Mickey Bullock hope this Saturday’s Wayne Invitational will set the stage for a focused and healthy January and February.

2001–02 alumni win basketball tournament

The Classes of 2001–02 won the 2003 YSHS Alumni Basketball Tournament last weekend, defeating the Classes of 1996–98, 62–56, in the championship game.

Jason Randolph and Andrew Pierce led the ’96–98 team with 14 points and 10 points, respectively. Their team led for most of the game until Michael Walker, who led all scores with 21 points, helped the ’01–02 squad come back. The ’01–02 team overcame ’96–98 with five minutes left and never looked back. Neal Perry had 9 points for the ’01–02 team.

The winning team will receive their awards at halftime of the YSHS boys varsity home game against Cedarville Saturday, Jan. 3.
