OBITUARIES

John F. Lounsbury

John F. Lounsbury of Ypsilanti, Mich., died on Friday, Dec. 26, at the Arbor Hospice Residence. He was 85.

Born on Oct. 26, 1918, in Perham, Minn., he was the son of Charles E. and Maude (Knight) Lounsbury. He served in WWII and was wounded in the first wave of the landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day.

He began his career as a professor of geography at Antioch College and served as the chairman of the geography department at Eastern Michigan University from 1961 to 1969. He was also the chairman of the geography department at Arizona State University from 1969 until his retirement in 1987.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothea; three sons and a daughter-in-law, John Lounsbury, Craig Lounsbury and Jim and Jules Lounsbury; four grandchildren, David, Lindsey, Casey and Allison; and one great-grandchild, Morgan.

Bereniece Vance

Bereniece E. Vance of New Carlisle died Sunday evening, Dec. 21, in Essex of Springfield. She was 85.

Born in Clifton on Dec. 29, 1917, she was the daughter of Harvey and Glenna (Ferryman) Brubaker. She was a member of the New Carlisle Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David Lambert; one sister; and three brothers.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Carmen Foster, Joan Lambert and Sue and Buck Evans, all of Springfield, and Edythe and C.C. Cronin of Canyon Country, Calif.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Howard Lambert and John and Becky Lambert, all of Springfield; a daughter-in-law, Linda Lambert of Springfield; three sisters; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 24, at Littleton & Rue Funeral Home in Springfield, with burial following in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.


Robert Dakin

Robert Warren “Bobby” Dakin of Xenia died on Wednesday, Dec. 24, due to an automobile accident. He was 55.

He was born in Warren County on Aug. 14, 1948, the son of Roy and Mary (Hamman) Dakin.

He was employed at Morris Bean & Co. and on the maintenance staff at Heathergreene (Liberty) Nursing Home. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed camping and was a fan of Nascar.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Dakin of Corwin; his wife, Jean (Adams) Dakin, whom he married Aug. 9, 1972; son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Terry Mills of Xenia; grandson, Bryan Keith Mills; brother, Roy Everett Dakin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris and Paul Trimble of Waynesville; Joanie and Jim McIntosh of Middletown and Betty Ann Dakin and Charlie Sesslar of Corwin; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jack and Pam Adams of Xenia.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at McColaugh Funeral Home in Xenia, with burial following in Corwin Cemetery.


Dorothy Helfrick

Dorothy M. Helfrick of Springfield died Monday morning, Dec. 22, in Friends Care Community. She was 92.

Born in Springfield on June 23, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Sylvia (Charles) Bauser.

She worked at Crowell-Collier Publishing and Ulery Greenhouses. She was a longtime member of First Christian Church and volunteered at Elderly United and Community Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Helfrick; two sisters, Mary Rothaar and Alma Bauser; and four brothers, George, Jake, Charlie and Woodrow Bauser.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Marianne and Jim Gregory of Springfield and Carolyn and Dick Eichelberger of Urbana; son and daughter-in-law, Wendell and Joyce Helfrick of Springfield; grandchildren, Rick and Laura Eichelberger, Randy and Anna Eichelberger, Kristi and Tim Morris, Beth and Tom Culross, Adam Shook and Angie Shook; six great-grandchildren, Ian, Cortney, Carly Eichelberger, Janelle Morris, Rachel and Brian Culross; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 26, in the chapel of Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, 313 West High Street, Springfield, Ohio 45506.
