Lady Bulldogs post 2nd win of year

The YSHS girls basketball team improved to 2–1 this year by defeating Stivers, 51–43, last Monday during the Lady Bulldogs’ home opener.

YSHS junior Evin Wimberly shooting during the girls basketball team’s win over Stivers on Monday at home. Wimberly scored 19 points and now needs just 6 more to reach 1,000 in her high school career.

YSHS jumped to an early 18–7 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. The Lady Bulldogs led throughout the game, and though they lagged a little toward the end, they pulled the game out.

The Lady ’Dogs were led by three big scorers, Megan Burrick, Tricia McLinden and Evin Wimberly.

Wimberly closed in on a personal milestone during the game, scoring 19 points and collecting 8 steals. She remains just 6 points away from reaching 1,000 in her career.

McLinden scored 13 and had 4 steals and Burrick scored 10 points and also had 4 steals.

“ We still need to work on a few basic things in our defense,” coach Shirley Cummins said. “We also have to keep our level of play up” and stay intense.

McKinney girls basketball
The McKinney girls teams played Greeneview last Wednesday and with only seventh-graders to play both games, the Lady Bulldogs won its seventh-grade game, 38–30, and lost the eighth-grade game, 28–24.

The teams played Middletown Christian on Saturday, and again won the seventh-grade game, 31–15, and lost the eighth-grade game, 24–22.

In Wednesday’s seventh-grade game, Theresa Skinner and Ryder Comstock led McKinney in scoring with 9 and 8 points, respectively. Greeneview mounted a furious fourth quarter comeback to take the lead with a minute left in the game, but the Lady Bulldogs forced the game into overtime and quickly pulled ahead.

A balanced scoring in Saturday’s seventh-grade game allowed McKinney to unseat an outmatched Middletown Christian. But in the second game, the Lady Bulldogs kept their opponents within striking distance and mounted a frantic fourth quarter comeback that came up just short.
