school girls basketball—Lady ’Dogs lose scrimmage
The YSHS girls basketball team took stock of its strengths and weaknesses
during a scrimmage Friday, Nov. 15, against Jefferson.
Playing in a Metro Buckeye Conference preseason scrimmage at Xenia Christian,
Jefferson topped the Lady Bulldogs, 27–18.
In addition to YSHS and Jefferson, six other Metro Buckeye teams played
during the preview: Middletown Christian played Cincinnati Christian,
Ridgeville took on Troy Christian and Miami Valley played Xenia Christian.
Instead of the normal four quarters, each game was divided into two periods.
According to YSHS coach Shirley Cummins, the preview was different from
a regular season game, but more than a competitive match: it gave the
Lady Bulldogs a chance to assess themselves before the season starts.
“We need to polish up on shooting and transition mostly. This year’s
team also has a lot of speed, which we need to utilize,” Cummins
said.
Cummins, in her second-year with Yellow Springs, said she believes that
“the little things win games. We need work on the little things,
rebounds, lay-ups, passing.”
Overall the Lady Bulldogs showed promise, Cummins said. “I told them
‘great job’ after the game was over,” she said. “I’m
extremely happy with our team this year.”
YSHS will play its first game of the year Tuesday, Nov. 26, when it hosts
Greeneview.
